We recovered from jet lag in a Lillehuset, a small cabin in Jessheim, which is a town near the airport. We rested better than we have in months.
The next day, we set off for a full day in Oslo catching a local train into the central station. We started with kaffe and bolle (yum cardamom!). We spent the day seeing multiple museums and walked the waterfront - Oslo was incredible! We capped it off with a multi course salmon dinner on the water before catching a sleeper train to Bergen.
Quite an experience to sleep on a train! The Vy trains in Norway are a great way to travel across the country. This one crosses over the mountains, so we made sure to sleep through this leg and were wide awake for the trip back. This was suprisingly comfy accommodations with a wakeup call 15 mins before disembarking.
Once we hopped off our sleeper train, we picked up delicious bolle and kaffe and boarded an express ferry to the Sognefjord and alighted at Balestrand and made our way to our rental apartment that overlooked the town and the water.
We fell in love with this place. We hiked and visited the Ciderhuset to drink amazing ciders and juices. We went fishing and on a fjord boat tour adventure with Captain Tor of Balestrand Fjord Angling. We walked the streets seeing dragon architecture, visited St. Olaf's Church, stood in awe of Kvikne's Hotel, ate amazing food, and lived like locals. We even ate the fish we caught, fjord chicken (sand whiting), as our our lifelong native captain lovingly called them.
We caught the express ferry back to Bergen, where we spent a couple hours sightseeing and having kaffe, of course. Next, we took the train going back east where we stopped in Ål, halfway to Oslo. The town is a ski destination in winter and mountain bike/hiking destination in summer. Since we were in off season, it was sleepy and quiet - perfect for us. We tried a thai restaurant there!
We started our day enjoying a Norwegian continental breakfast spread at the hotel. Followed by a nature walk along the water, and wrapping with kaffe and bolle. Then, we took the train to Oslo. Our final night was right next to the Oslo Cathedral at the boutique Hobo Hotel. We wrapped up the night with a divine dinner at the Cathedral's restaurant, where Ben tried the Sami delicacy of Reindeer!
We had an incredible honeymoon across Norway. We cannot wait to go back.
Thank you for helping us with your contributions and love to send us off.
